Is my property in a community watershed in BC?

A community watershed is the land draining to a licensed drinking-water intake, designated so that logging and roads there protect the water. A report says whether the lot lies in one of the Province's designated watersheds, the creek or lake it feeds, whose water it is, how it's used and how many connections it serves.

The Province has designated 466 community watersheds, lying in 146 places, read 2026-10-07; a report says whether any BC lot lies in one and whose water it is. The places, by name.

The report opens at this answer, with the lot drawn on the map and every other check alongside. A PID (on the tax notice or title) always finds the lot; an address works when it's an exact match.

What the answer means

What it is
A community watershed is the land draining to a licensed drinking-water intake. Most were designated in 1995 under the Forest Practices Code and carried over under the Forest and Range Practices Act; the Province can designate more under the Government Actions Regulation.
What it asks of logging and roads
Logging and road building on Crown land there must keep the water from harming the quantity, timing or safety of the supply (Forest Planning and Practices Regulation, s. 8.2). Whoever logs or builds roads there under a forest licence, permit or agreement may not cut timber or build a road within 100 m upslope of a licensed drinking-water intake unless it won't send more sediment to the intake (s. 60), and must tell the affected water licensees or water suppliers at least 48 hours before building or deactivating a road in a community watershed (s. 84).
On private land
The designation sets no rule for private land by itself (our reading), but the people downstream drink the water: ask the water system what it asks of landowners, and keep a septic field, fuel, manure and livestock well back from the creek.
Your own water
Being inside a community watershed doesn't say whether a lot is on that water system (our reading). Ask the water system or the local government whether the lot is connected or can be; a well, or a licence to take water from the creek, is the lot's own.
Who to ask
The water system named for the watershed, about what it asks of landowners and whether the lot can connect; the Ministry of Forests' natural resource district, about logging and roads planned upstream; the local government and the health authority, about bylaws and septic systems near the water.

Our summary of the Forest Planning and Practices Regulation, ss. 1, 8.2, 60 and 84, read on BC Laws 2026-10-07. The map draws each watershed as the Province designated it; 106 are marked under review on it. Confirm with the water system and the natural resource district before you buy or build.

From the Province's Community Watersheds – Current, read 2026-10-07. Areas are measured by us on the 2021 census boundaries; a watershed is listed in each place holding at least 5% of it, and always in the one holding most of it. 3 lie on land without a place page here, reserves among them, and aren't listed. A water system's operator is named only where the Province's map lists it as a waterworks or a water users' body; connections are the Province's count of the system's service connections, where it gives one.
