PlaceDossier / Questions
Is my property on or next to First Nations reserve land?
A report says when a lot is on reserve land, and names any reserve within 500 m of the lot line, from the federal reserve boundaries. Every BC place's reserves are below.
The federal boundaries hold 1,565 reserves of 189 First Nations in or beside 169 places, read 2026-10-07; a report says when a lot is on one or within 500 m of one. The places, by name.
The report opens at this answer, with the lot drawn on the map and every other check alongside. A PID (on the tax notice or title) always finds the lot; an address works when it's an exact match.
What the answer means
- Who decides
- Land use on reserve land is decided by the First Nation, under its own land code or laws or its bylaws under the Indian Act, not by the local government's zoning bylaw.
- Provincial housing rules
- The Province's small-scale housing minimums and transit-oriented area tiers don't apply on reserve land, and a zone a local government's map draws over reserve land isn't the rule that applies.
- Holding the land
- Leases and permits on reserve land are registered with the federal government, not the Land Title Office. A buyer who isn't a member of the First Nation most often takes over a lease for a set term rather than buying the land (our reading); ask the First Nation's lands office and a lawyer who knows reserve leases.
- Next to a reserve
- The local government's zoning and development applications don't say what may be built on the reserve next door: ask the First Nation's lands office what's planned there.
- What isn't listed
- Treaty settlement lands, such as those of the Nisga'a, Tsawwassen and Maa-nulth nations, and land a First Nation owns in fee simple aren't reserves and aren't on the federal reserve boundaries.
Our summary, checked 2026-10-07. The reserve boundaries come from the Canada Lands Survey System; a lot within a few metres of one may in fact touch it, or not, as the two maps are drawn apart. Confirm with the First Nation's lands office and a lawyer before you buy or build.

From the Province's copy of the federal reserve boundaries (Indian Reserves and Band Names), read 2026-10-07. Reserves are census areas of their own, so each is listed under the place it lies in or borders, placed by us; one reserve is listed once. First Nations' names are as the boundaries give them. Treaty settlement lands and land a First Nation owns in fee simple aren't reserves and aren't on this list.
